6-4-20 ENGLISH, Sonnet 18 - Poem Analysis

HELLO EVERYONE!!!

How are you today?

What a better way to start the week than with a nice photo!

I really hope you liked Sonnet 18...

Did you listen to the poem analysis? If not, just press the link!

Then get ready to answer some questions!!!

1. What is the poem about?
______________________________________________________

2. Who is the poem addressed to?
______________________________________________________

3. What exactly is the Shakespearean form in which it is written?
______________________________________________________

4. Before posing the next question, let me explain metaphors to you

A metaphor a type of figurative language, often used in poetry. It is, in  simple terms, a comparison. It forms a link between two unlike things by stating one thing is another.

Can you find the metaphor Shakespeare creates in the first quatrain (=τετράστιχο)?
____________________________________________________________________________________________________

5. What does the poet imply (=υπαινίσσεται) about the beauty of summer? Which lines suggest it?
__________________________________________________

6. In the second quatrain Shakespeare creates another metaphor. Can you understand what he means by "the eye of heaven"?
__________________________________________________

7. In the last quatrain he creates one last metaphor with the words "eternal lines". Can you guess what the "eternal lines" are?
__________________________________________________

8. What do you think the couplet (=δίστιχο) means?
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

9. Did you like this poem? Why? How did it make you feel?
______________________________________________________

10. Did you prefer this poem with the music or without? Why?
______________________________________________________

CONGRATULATIONS on all the effort you have put! After all this hard work on poetry, I think you are ready to join a poetry club!!!

Now, why don't you relax while listening to this beautiful song.

Before I leave you, I'm challenging those of you who liked this poem to experiment with it and change it at will!

In order to do this you need to realize the importance of adjectives (= επίθετα) in poems.

Κeep this well in mind:
An adjective is the part of speech that describes a noun (person, place, or thing). Poets use adjectives to give a detailed and vivid description of the noun they are describing.
Using descriptive language to illustrate strong feelings such as pain or love can help the poet show the intensity of the feelings they are experiencing and to paint a more memorable picture for the reader.
Now let’s make an experiment and change the season in Sonnet 18! Why don't you try to change the adjectives accordingly so that the poem still makes sense?

After completing this hard task, you'll be entitled to give your sonnet any number and music you like!!!

Shall I compare thee to a WINTER’s day?
Thou art more _____________  and more ____________:
_____________winds do shake the ____________ buds of January,
And winter’s lease hath all too _________ a date:
Sometime too ____________ the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his ___________ complexion dimmed,
And every __________ from ____________sometime declines,
By chance, or nature’s changing course untrimmed:
But thy eternal winter shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st,
Nor shall death brag thou wand’rest in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st,
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

Take your time, you have a week to complete your tasks.

Next week, I'll provide you with the KEY to the POEM ANALYSIS QUESTIONS to self correct.

TAKE GOOD CARE DEAR STUDENTS.

THINKING OF YOU..

Are you ready for the challenge of Shakespeare's ...

Sonnet 18 ???  Then, enjoy it!!

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer’s lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimmed,
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature’s changing course untrimmed:
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st,
Nor shall death brag thou wand’rest in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st,
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?         Shall I compare you to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:         You are more lovely and more constant:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, Rough winds shake the beloved buds of May
And summer's lease hath all too short a date: And summer is far too short:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,         At times the sun is too hot,
And often is his gold complexion dimm'd;        Or often goes behind the clouds;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,       And everything beautiful sometime will lose its                                                                                     beauty,
By chance, or nature's changing course, untrimm'd;By misfortune or by nature's planned out                                                                                         course.
But thy eternal summer shall not fade                But your youth shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st;         Nor will you lose the beauty that you possess;
Nor shall Death brag thou wander'st in his shade, Nor will death claim you for his own,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st;         Because in my eternal verse you will live forever.
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,        So long as there are people on this earth,
So long lives this and this gives life to thee.        So long will this poem live on, making you                                                                                           immortal.
